SPS and Physics News
- Meteor Crater trip Saturday, October 10th 2026
- All members invited; let us know if you want to come!
- APS Four Corners Conference
- Great opportunity to network and learn about new developments in science and technology research
- Travel and lodging paid for; just email Dr. Dolle ([email protected])
- Have you heard of a time crystal?
- Scientists have produced a superconductor time crystal that looks the same forwards and backwards
- Ongoing Research On Campus
- The informatics department on campus has conducted research that shows that there is NOT an advanced alien civilization near us. They did this by comparing young planets in the habitable zone by applying the Drake Equation.
- Weekly Trivia
- Question: What fundamental physical property prevents the magnetic nanoparticles in a ferrofluid from clumping together and settling out of the carrier liquid over time?
- Answer: A surfactant coating that creates steric or electrostatic repulsion between particles

Demo Night: Archimedean Lock
- Archimedes’ Principle: Any object wholly or partially submerged in a fluid experiences an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object
- Fun fact: when a boat with ore throws those ores into a canal lock, the water level in the canal drops
- This is because, at first, the volume displaced is relative to the boat and only depends on the mass of the ore when it is in the boat
- When the mass is dumped off the boat, the water level displacement no longer relies on the mass of the ore but on the volumeÂ
